General Accident

Commercial Union and General Accident have agreed a £14bn merger to create a new group called CGU that will be the UK's second-biggest insurer, and about 5,000 jobs will be lost.

General Accident is pulling out of Scandinavia with the sale of Activ Forsikring, its Norwegian operation, to Skandia Insurance for undisclosed terms.

General Accident has acquired Canadian General Insurance Group for £270m, increasing its share of the Canadian market from under 7% to 10%.

General Accident is buying two German companies for £61m from UAP of France - UAP Allgemeine, a general insurer, and UAP International Leben, a life insurer.

General Accident has bought Provident Mutual for £170m.

General Accident may acquire Provident Mutual, in a deal worth over £100m.
