Babtie, the Glasgow-based engineering consultancy with 3,500 staff, has been acquired by Jacobs Engineering of the US for about £90m.

Babtie is planning to double the size of its engineering and technical services business over the next five years, and the 3,600-strong workforce could also be doubled.

Babtie Group is to create an unspecified number of jobs at its engineering consultancy in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, to work on new contracts for international road safety research projects.

Babtie Group has acquired Rushbrook Consultants, the fire safety consultant, and will create a new business unit called Babtie Rushbrook at offices in Glasgow.

Babtie Group has acquired Allott & Lomax, the Manchester-based engineering consultancy, for undisclosed terms.

Babtie has acquired Kensall, the chartered surveying and project management company, and the staff will join Babtie's quantity surveying division.
